Bank of Maldives (BML) offers bulk processing of salary for several companies and government organization. Almost all resorts use this service. The company writes a check for the total amount of salaries and provide a sheet that indicates account details of every employee along with the amount to be credited to each as well as the bank commissions for the transaction. According to a media report the error occurred right after a change of format which caused the account number itself picked up as salary amount. Hence, it came out in excess of US$77bn to each employee. It is apparent that the system used for this process did not automatically tally the total amount against individual salary amounts. Otherwise, this could have easily been prevented.
